redirect_canonical() │ WP 2.3.0
Defines whether the current request should be redirected to another URL. It performs the redirection if necessary.
This is an SEO function that by default automatically redirects, but in the second parameter, you can specify for the function to return the URL to which it intends to redirect.
For example, for search engines, the sites www.example.com and example.com are two different sites, so for SEO, it is necessary for the site to always be located at one address to avoid duplicate content. This function takes care of that.
Redirects from non-pretty URLs to pretty URLs when pretty URLs are enabled. However, it does not redirect to pretty URLs during post previews, in the admin area, during searches, or POST requests.
The function also tries to find the correct URL if there was an error in it. For example, if the correct URL is /mypage-first, and we try to access /mypage, then the function will redirect us to the correct URL with a 301 status.
It performs many other different checks.
This function by default triggers on the action template_redirect:

#1 Disabling redirection in posts for pagination
By default, WordPress redirects to the post main page when you try to go to that post's pagination page, but the post have no any pagination pages - see post pagination. Sometimes this behavior needs to be disabled.
For example, let's imagine that we make some module for posts and we need the pagination URL of the posts to work /mypage/page/2 - the function will redirect to /mypage/, but we do not need it and this behavior should be disabled:
