verify_file_signature() │ WP 5.2.0
Verifies a file against one or more Ed25519 digital signatures.
It calculates the file's SHA-384 hash and checks the signatures against trusted WordPress keys obtained through wp_trusted_keys() . Verification succeeds when at least one signature matches at least one key.
Signatures and trusted keys must be Base64-encoded. Signatures and keys with an invalid length are skipped.
The function checks signatures only against WordPress's built-in trusted keys. A custom public key cannot be supplied.
The SHA-384 algorithm and either the native Sodium extension or a sufficiently fast Sodium_Compat polyfill are required.
1 time — 0.000417 sec (fast) | 50000 times — 1.72 sec (fast) | PHP 8.2.28, WP 7.0.2
No Hooks.
Returns
true|false|WP_Error.
true - the signature is valid.
WP_Error - verification is impossible, the signature is missing, or verification failed.
false - documented for a case where verification was not performed; current code does not return this value.
Usage
verify_file_signature( $filename, $signatures, $filename_for_errors );
$filename(string) (required)
Path to the file to verify.
$signatures(string|array) (required)
One Ed25519 signature or an array of signatures in Base64 format.
$filename_for_errors(string|false)
Human-readable file name for error messages. It does not affect the path. If false, the name from $filename is used.
Default: false
Examples
#1 File signature verification
$result = verify_file_signature(
WP_CONTENT_DIR . '/upgrade/wordpress.zip',
$signature,
'wordpress.zip'
);
if ( is_wp_error( $result ) ) {
wp_die( esc_html( $result->get_error_message() ) );
