WP_List_Table{} │ WP 3.1.0 │ AllowDynamicProperties
Basic class for creating tables with a list of anything in WordPress. The tables support AJAX technology. All types of tables in the WordPress admin panel are based on this class.
Usage by developers and private status
In 2012, the private status of this class was announced. This meant that it is used in the WordPress core and is not intended for use in plugins. And developers will not make significant efforts to maintain backward compatibility of code related to this class...
However, despite this, plugin developers began to use this class more frequently - it turned out to be very convenient for creating their own tables in plugins.
Today, the structure of this class is quite stable, and it is unlikely that future changes will significantly affect the code created with its help. However, developers are still advised to check the functionality of the code with major WordPress releases.
If you do not want to risk compatibility, as an option, you can copy the code of the WP_List_Table class. And write a plugin based on the copied code. Thus, changes to the main class will not affect your plugin.
Usage
WP_List_Table is used as an API for creating data tables in the WordPress admin panel. Usually, such data is obtained from the database. The class allows you to create tables in the WordPress style with pagination, bulk actions on items, search, and filters. In general, everything you see in the WordPress admin, for example, in the post list table or on the plugins page, etc.
To use WP_List_Table, you need to create another extending class: WP_List_Table in this case serves as the basis for your class. Next, you need to work with the created class - create its instance, and then use the method display() in the necessary places of the code that relate to your class instance.
Template for creating a table
IMPORTANT: The main class WP_List_Table is included later than the init event. It is recommended to extend the class during the admin_init event.
<?php
// extend the class after or during admin_init
// it is more convenient to place the class in a separate file.
class Example_List_Table extends WP_List_Table {
function __construct(){
parent::__construct(array(
'singular' => 'log',
'plural' => 'logs',

$this->set_pagination_args( array(
'total_items' => 3,
'per_page' => $per_page,

$cur_page = (int) $this->get_pagenum(); // preferably after set_pagination_args()

Code to call the above class, which we placed in a separate file class-Example_List_Table.php :

// WP < 5.4.2. saving the screen option per_page. Must be called early before the 'admin_menu' event
add_filter( 'set-screen-option', function( $status, $option, $value ){
return ( $option == 'logs_per_page' ) ? (int) $value : $status;
}, 10, 3 );
// create a page in the menu where we display the table
add_action( 'admin_menu', function(){
$hook = add_menu_page( 'Title', 'Menu Name', 'manage_options', 'page-slug', 'example_table_page', 'dashicons-products', 100 );
add_action( "load-$hook", 'example_table_page_load' );
} );
function example_table_page_load(){
require_once __DIR__ . '/class-Example_List_Table.php'; // here is the Example_List_Table class...
// Create an instance and save it for access when displaying the table.
// It needs to be initialized here for add_screen_option() functionality to work.
$GLOBALS['Example_List_Table'] = new Example_List_Table();
}
function example_table_page(){
?>
<div class="wrap">
<h2><?php echo get_admin_page_title() ?></h2>
<?php
// output the table on the screen where needed
echo '<form action="" method="POST">';
$GLOBALS['Example_List_Table']->display();
echo '</form>';
?>
</div>
<?php
}
This code is just a skeleton. To work fully, you need to describe other methods of the Example_List_Table class.
As a result, you will get a table like this:
The structure of the WP_List_Table{} class — which methods are responsible for which block:
Class properties
Important
$items(array) (public)
This is where data is collected in the form of an array, which will then be processed and displayed in the table. Usually, this property is filled in the prepare_items() method, which is defined in the child class.
Others
$_args(array) (protected)
Contains various information in the form of an array about the table. Usually, this property is not changed directly.
Information about pagination in the form of an array. Usually not changed directly, but through the use of get_pagination_arg(string) or set_pagination_args(array) .
$screen(object) (protected)
This saves the current page (screen) when it is necessary to have constant access to this data.
$_actions(array) (private)
Contains cached global actions on the table data (dropdown). Not edited directly.
Contains cached pagination output. Not edited directly.
$modes(array) (protected)
View modes that can be switched.
$_column_headers(array) (protected)
Contains all data about the table columns in a multidimensional array of 4 parameters:
array(
get_column_headers(),
get_hidden_columns(),
$sortable, // defined in the code get_column_info()
get_primary_column_name()
)
Defining this variable from version 4.3 is not mandatory; it will be determined by the get_column_info() method during the output of columns by the print_column_headers() method.
Class methods
Here, the division into important and unimportant is not entirely correct and appropriate, but I think it is more convenient than without division...
Important
__construct( $args ) (public)
Constructor. The parameters passed in $args:
$plural (string) — Name for the plural form, used in various headers, for example in CSS classes, in notes, for example 'posts', then 'posts' will be added to the table class.
Default: '' ($this->screen->base)
$singular (string) — Name for the singular form, for example 'post'.
Default: ''
$ajax (boolean) — Should the table support AJAX. If true, the class will call the method _js_vars() in the footer to pass the necessary variables to any script handling AJAX events.
Default: false
$screen (string) — A string containing the name of the hook needed to determine the current page. If null, the current screen will be set.
Default: null
prepare_items() (public)
Prepares data for the table. This method should be described in the child class. This is an important method on which the entire table is built. Here, all table data, pagination data, etc. are usually set. Use $this->set_pagination_args() in this method and define the property $this->items - usually, the result of the SQL query is written into it - $wpdb->get_results( $sql ) .
column_cb( $item ) (protected)
Outputs the HTML code for the cb column - this is the first column of checkboxes (cb)... This method needs to be defined in the child class.
column_default( $item, $column_name ) (protected)
The method that is responsible for what a separate cell of the column contains when a separate method for outputting its data is not defined.
When the class outputs the HTML code of the cell through single_row_columns() (output of the row), for the code of a separate cell, it first checks if there is a special method - column_{$column_name}() . If such a method does not exist, the output is passed to this method. Where $item is the row data (the current object), and $column_name is the name of the cell.
column_{$column_name}( $item )(protected)
A dynamic method that is responsible for the HTML code of the cell related to the column $column_name .
For example, if the method is named column_post_title() , it will be used to output the data of the cell in the column named post_title.
$item here is the data object of the entire row - the current object. For example, in the posts table, $item contains the post object $post , and the current method should output only one value of this object $post->post_title .
_column_{$column_name}( $item, $classes, $data, $primary )(protected)
Similar to the previous method, it is responsible for the HTML code of the cell related to the column $column_name .
For example, if the method is named _column_post_title() , it will be used to output the data of the cell in the column named post_title.
$item — the current object (for example WP_Post).
$classes — class='$classes' — CSS classes of the cell.
$data — 'data-colname="' . wp_strip_all_tags( $column_display_name ) . '"'
$primary — the name of the main column of the table.
current_action() (public)
Gets the current action selected in the bulk actions dropdown. Gets the value of the request parameter: current_action , action or action2 .
display() (public)
Outputs the entire table on the screen. The table must first be defined, all data collected, and only then output with this method.
Additional table controls that are located between bulk actions and pagination. Usually, data filters for the table are placed here.
get_bulk_actions() (protected)
Gets an associative array array( option_name => option_title ) - list of bulk actions. Fills the property $this->_actions .
get_column_count() (public)
Gets the number - the number of columns. Number = all columns - hidden columns.
get_columns() (public)
Gets the list of columns. Format array( 'internal-name' => 'Title' ). This method needs to be defined in the child class and should return an array with a list of all columns of the table.
get_default_primary_column_name() (protected)
Gets the name of the main column. Needs to be defined in the child class.
get_items_per_page( $option, $default ) (protected)
Gets the number of items to show on the pagination page.
get_sortable_columns() (protected)
Gets the list of columns by which data can be sorted. Format: 'internal-name' => 'orderby' or 'internal-name' => array( 'orderby', true )
get_table_classes() (protected)
Gets the CSS classes of the table: array( 'widefat', 'fixed', 'striped', $this->_args['plural'] );
get_pagenum() (public)
Gets the number of the current pagination page.
Sets pagination parameters in the property $this->_pagination_args . Redirects if an incorrect pagination page is specified.
Gets pagination parameters.
row_actions( $actions, $always_visible ) (protected)
Gathers the HTML code for actions on a separate object. $actions are passed, and links are gathered from them.
handle_row_actions( $item, $column_name, $primary ) (protected)
Creates and outputs action links with the object. It is output in the cells of the main column. For example, in posts, links: edit, view under the title...
You need to create an array, place links in it $array['action_name'] = '<a href="https://example.com/bar">foo</a>' and then return this array through return $this->row_actions( $array );
search_box( $text, $input_id ) (public)
Outputs the HTML code for the search box. Sets the current search query in the input, adds necessary hidden sorting fields for the form, etc.
ajax_user_can() (public)
Checks the current user's rights to perform AJAX requests.
Others
no_items()(public)
Message that will be shown when there is no data in the table.
has_items()(public)
Checks if there is data in the table.
Outputs pagination - to the right of the table.
print_column_headers( $with_id )(public)
Outputs the HTML code for the table header row with columns. The table header (th). Sets various arrows for sortable columns, hides hidden ones, sets IDs and classes for HTML tags th, etc.
display_tablenav( $which )(protected)
Outputs the table control panel in the following order: dropdown list of bulk actions, extra_tablenav() and finally pagination.
bulk_actions( $which )(protected)
Outputs a dropdown list with global actions.
_js_vars()(public)
Sets JavaScript variables in the DOM of the page, needed when the table uses AJAX updates.
ajax_response()(public)
Processes incoming ajax requests (called from admin-ajax.php )
display_rows()(public)
Outputs each row of the table. foreach( $this->items as $item ) $this->single_row( $item );
In place of this method, it is better to use display_rows_or_placeholder() , because it checks if there are items; if there are, it calls this method; if not, it outputs the message "no items".
display_rows_or_placeholder()(public)
Wrapper for display_rows() with a check for whether there are items to output...
single_row( $item )(public)
Creates the HTML code for the tr row - a wrapper for $this->single_row_columns() .
single_row_columns( $item )(protected)
Creates the HTML code for the tr row - all td cells.
months_dropdown( $post_type )(protected)
Outputs a dropdown list of months for filtering posts.
Outputs the number of comments. An internal method used for posts. It is not needed for custom or private tables...
get_column_info()(protected)
Gathers an array of data about all columns: sortable, hidden, etc. = array( $columns, $hidden, $sortable, $primary ). Applies hooks.
get_primary_column()(public)
Wrapper for public access to WP_List_Table::get_default_primary_column_name() .
get_primary_column_name()(protected)
Gets the name of the main column. Works based on get_default_primary_column_name() .
__call( $name, $arguments )(public)
Gives access to private/protected methods for backward compatibility.
__get( $name )(public)
Gives access to private properties for backward compatibility.
__isset( $name )(public)
Gives the ability to check private properties for backward compatibility.
__set( $name, $value )(public)
Gives the ability to set private properties for backward compatibility.
__unset( $name )(public)
Gives the ability to delete private properties for backward compatibility.
view_switcher()(protected)
View switcher. For example, in the media library, a switch from list to grid...
get_views()(protected)
Gets an array of data for the view switcher. Format: array( id => link ).
views()(public)
Outputs the HTML code for the view switcher.
