WP_Rewrite{}WP 1.5.0AllowDynamicProperties

Core class used to implement a rewrite component API.

The WordPress Rewrite class writes the rewrite module rules to the .htaccess file. It also handles parsing the request to get the correct setup for the WordPress Query class.

The Rewrite along with WP class function as a front controller for WordPress. You can add rules to trigger your page view and processing using this component. The full functionality of a front controller does not exist, meaning you can't define how the template files load based on the rewrite rules.

Examples

#1 Friendly URL for the optional static page parameter

Example rewrite Friendly URL of the form: http://mysite/project/1 to http://mysite/index.php?pagename=project&id=1:

add_filter( 'rewrite_rules_array', 'my_insert_rewrite_rules' );
add_filter( 'query_vars', 'my_insert_query_vars' );

// Add a new rule
function my_insert_rewrite_rules( $rules ){

	$newrules = [
		'(project)/(\d*)$' => 'index.php?pagename=$matches[1]&id=$matches[2]'
	];

	return $newrules + $rules;
}

// Let's add the id query variable to the variables so that WP knows about it
function my_add_query_vars( $vars ){
	array_push( $vars, 'id' );

	return $vars;
}

After adding such code, be sure to reset the rewrite rules.

You can always reset the rules simply by going to the Settings → Permalinks page in the admin panel. Or with flush_rewrite_rules() function. Or automatically such a reset can be done through register_activation_hook() function.

Now to get the value of the id parameter in your theme/plugin code use get_query_var() function:

$id = get_query_var( 'id' );

#3 Example of redirect from page /feed.xml to /feed/rss2

add_filter( 'generate_rewrite_rules', 'feed_dir_rewrite' );

function feed_dir_rewrite( $wp_rewrite ) {

	$feed_rules = array(
		'index.rdf' => 'index.php?feed=rdf',
		'index.xml' => 'index.php?feed=rss2',
		'(.+).xml'  => 'index.php?feed=' . $wp_rewrite->preg_index(1)
	);

	$wp_rewrite->rules = $feed_rules + $wp_rewrite->rules;

	return $wp_rewrite->rules;
}

Note that the variable is passed by reference and passes the entire WP_Rewrite class, not just on rewrite rules.

You need to enable such rules before WordPress does anything with the rewrite rules. That means before the init hook. Also keep in mind that such inclusion of rules will work for the whole site as if you had added them to the .htaccess file.

#5 Add .html suffix for static WordPress pages

add_action( 'init', 'html_page_permalink', -1 );

function html_page_permalink(){
	global $wp_rewrite; // contains WP_Rewrite object

	// if there is no '.html' in the page structure yet, add it
	if( ! strpos( $wp_rewrite->get_page_permastruct(), '.html' ) ){
		$wp_rewrite->page_structure = $wp_rewrite->page_structure . '.html';
	}
}

// Remove the slash at the end, if necessary.
// If there is a slash in the Friendly URL structure,
// it will be added to static pages as well.
add_filter( 'user_trailingslashit', 'no_page_slash', 70, 2 );

function no_page_slash( $string, $type ){
   global $wp_rewrite;

	if(
		$type == 'page' &&
		$wp_rewrite->using_permalinks() &&
		$wp_rewrite->use_trailing_slashes
	){
		$string = untrailingslashit( $string );
	}

   return $string;
}

To make the code work you need to reset the Friendly URL settings - go to page Settings → Permalinks.

#6 Changing the prefix in the author's (user's) URL (Friendly URL)

Usually the URL to the author's archive page looks like this: http://example.com/author/egorka/. Suppose we need to change the prefix (slug) from author to creator:

add_action( 'init', function(){
	$GLOBALS['wp_rewrite']->author_base = 'creator';
}, 1 );

Now, you also need to reset the Friendly URL settings in the admin, to do this, just go to the settings page "Permalinks"!

#7 Friendly URL for post type: type_posts/slug

Let's assume that when registering post type with register_post_type() we specified parameter rewrite=false, so now rewrite rules for post type are not created at all and must be created manually.

It's done this way:

add_action( 'init', function(){
	global $wp_rewrite;

	// Add a rewrite tag so that add_permastruct() understands it.
	// It will then be replaced by the part of the regular line
	// specified in the second parameter.
	$wp_rewrite->add_rewrite_tag( '%book%', '([^/]+)', "post_type=book&name=" );

	$permastruct = 'book/%book%'; // our Friendly URL structure

	// add Friendly URL structure
	$wp_rewrite->add_permastruct( 'book', $permastruct, array(
		'with_front'  => true,
		'paged'       => true,
		'feed'        => false,
		'forcomments' => false,
		'walk_dirs'   => false,
		'endpoints'   => false,
	) );

}, 1 );

// The third parameter in add_permastruct() can be omitted,
// then the arguments will be by default.

And you need to update the Friendly URL settings in the admin panel!

For the arguments $args, read the description of function add_permastruct().

#8 Post ID instead of name (shortcut) in Friendly URL for post type - "type_posts/ID"

Suppose, when registering the post type orders using register_post_type() parameter rewrite = false - the rewrite rules are not created and must be generated manually.

The URL should look like example.com/orders/123, where 123 is the post ID.

add_action( 'init', function(){

	// Create friendly URL rules
	add_rewrite_tag( '%order_id%', '([0-9]+)', "post_type=orders&p=" );

	// or you can do it this way

#9 Removing the post type name (prefix) from the URL

Option 1.

Suppose we have a new post type team, which has an URL of the form: example.com/team/dream-team. We want to remove the prefix team and make links of this post type look like this: example.com/dream-team.

add_filter( 'post_type_link', 'remove_post_type_slug', 10, 2 );
add_action( 'pre_get_posts', 'add_post_type_to_get_posts_request' );

// Remove the prefix with the post type name from the URL
function remove_post_type_slug( $post_link, $post ){

	if( $post->post_type === 'team' ){
		return str_replace( "/$post->post_type/", '/', $post_link );
	}

	return $post_link;
}

// Adding a post type to the query
function add_post_type_to_get_posts_request( $query ){

	if( is_admin() || ! $query->is_main_query() ){
		return; // not a primary request
	}

	// not a query with a name parameter (like a static page)
	if(
		! isset( $query->query['page'] ) ||
		empty( $query->query['name'] ) ||
		count( $query->query ) != 2
	){
		return;
	}

	$query->set( 'post_type', [ 'post', 'page', 'team' ] ); // 'team' added
}

Here we should keep in mind that our new URL of the form ``example.com/dream-team``` is exactly the same structure as the URL of static pages. And if the name of the static page and the post of the new type will coincide, then we'll get a conflict, and probably the wrong post will be shown. But since this situation is very unlikely, we simply keep this possible bug in mind and don't handle it in any way.

Option 2

In this variant post type is called pool_services and here we use the funciton add_permastruct() instead of the post_type_link hook - it allows us to remove post type name from URL not only at frontend but also in the admin area.

As a result, we'll get a URL of the form /postname instead of /pool-services/postname.

add_action( 'init', 'pw24_post_type_rewrite' );
add_action( 'pre_get_posts', 'pw24_add_post_type_to_get_posts_request' );

function pw24_post_type_rewrite() {
	global $wp_rewrite;

	// in this case the post type is `pool_services`
	$wp_rewrite->add_rewrite_tag( "%pool_services%", '([^/]+)', "pool_services=" );
	$wp_rewrite->add_permastruct( 'pool_services', '%pool_services%' );
}

function pw24_add_post_type_to_get_posts_request( $query ){

	if( is_admin() || ! $query->is_main_query() ){
		return; // not a primary request
	}

	// not a query with a name parameter (like a static page)
	if(
		! isset( $query->query['page'] ) ||
		empty( $query->query['name'] ) ||
		count( $query->query ) != 2
	){
		return;
	}

	// add 'pool_services'
	$query->set( 'post_type', [ 'post', 'page', 'pool_services' ] );
}

Now in the links (on the site and in the admin area), there is no 'pool-services' post type name and all pages work as they should.
